rexAy Subject: PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION SITE FOR THE NEAR SOUTHSIDE MULTI-PURPOSE
I"' CENTER
On December 13, 1977, the City Council delayed action on M&C G-3660 and
directed staff to gather additional information on the alternative use
of the site which had been selected by the community for construction of
the Near Southside Multi-Purpose Center.
Background
During the Citizen Partic.ipaticn meeting on August 18, 1977, a report was
given on the balloting by the citizens for the proposed center site. The
site selected is bounded by East Rosedale, Verbena, Veal and New York.
During its meeting November 14, 1977, the Community Development Council
accepted the citizens' recommendation as the site for the center.
Since the action of the Community Development Council, the staff has received
numerous calls from citizens who frequent a restaurant on the proposed site
and they have expressed a strong desire for the restaurant to remain at its
location on the corner of Veal and East Rosedale Streets.
The staff has re-evaluated the proposed site for the center and finds that
by using only the eastern portion of the proposed site (extending east from
the east side cf the restaurant property) ; by closing a part of the 900 block
of Verbena; and by acquiring the necessary property on the north side of
Verbena, the proposed change can be satisfactorily accomplished.
The alternative will require the land acquisition and relocation of twelve
single family frame residences, one four unit apartment, one bail bond
business and one substandard vacant commercial structure. Opposition is
anticipated from one owner occupant who has stated that she will appear before
City Council on Tuesday, December 20, 1977.
The approximate cost for land acquisition and relocation will be $225,000
which is the same as the cost estimated for earlier relocation and acquisition
including the restaurant property.
This alternative proposal will comply with the citizen input on site selec-
tion and meet the wishes of those desiring not to move the restaurant.
If additional information is desired, it will be submitted upon request.
Respectfully su mitted,
