HomeMy WebLinkAboutOrdinance 16746-12-2005'T .~, Ordinance No. 7 b -r' o1-oZLt~-~ AN ORDINANCE INCREASING ESTIMATED RECEIPTS AND APPROPRIATIONS IN THE GRANTS FUND IN THE AMOUNT OF $150 000 SUBJECT TO RECEIPT OF THE GRANT FROM THE U S DEPARTMENT OF THE HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES HEALTH AND RESOURCES AND SERVICES ADMINISTRATION, FOR THE PURPOSE OF FUNDING FITFUTURE FORT WORTH IN THE PUBLIC HEALTH DEPARTMENT'S HEALTH AND PROMOTION AND EDUCATION SECTION; MAKING THIS ORDINANCE CUMULATIVE OF PRIOR ORDINANCES IN CONFLICT HEREWITH AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT WORTH, TEXAS• SECTION 1 That in addition to those amounts allocated to the various City departments for Fiscal Year 2005-2006 and in the Budget of the City Manager there shall also be increased estimated receipts and appropriations in the Grants Fund in the amount of $150 000 subject to receipt of the grant from the U S Department of Health and Human Services, Health and Resources and Services Administration, for the purpose of funding FitFuture Fort Worth in the Public Health Department's Health and Promotion and Education section. SECTION 2. That should any portion, section or part of a section of this ordinance be declared invalid, inoperative or void for any reason by a court of competent jurisdiction, such decision, opinion or judgment shall in no way impair the remaining portions, sections, or .parts of sections of this ordinance, which said remaining provisions shall be and remain in full force and effect. SECTION 3. That this ordinance shall be cumulative of Ordinance No. 16582 and all other ordinances and appropriations amending the same except in those instances where the provisions of this ordinance are in direct conflict with such other ordinances and appropriations, in which instance said conflicting provisions of said prior ordinances and appropriations are hereby expressly repealed. SECTION 4 This ordinance shall take effect upon adoption. Adopt the attached appropriation ordinances increasing estimated receipts and appropriations by $150 000 00 each year in the Grants Fund DISCUSSION The Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) provides grant funds to develop creative and innovative approaches that are effective in reducing the prevalence of obesity in women by increasing the number of women who adopt positive healthy lifestyles The City of Fort Worth Public Health Department's Health Promotion & Education section is proposing such an intervention to be implemented under the FitFuture Fort Worth initiative to impact the knowledge attitudes and behaviors of women in a targeted area with regards to good nutrition and increased physical activity Women Impacting Their Health A Community Nutrition & Physical Activity Project in Underserved Areas of Fort Worth will develop and use existing community partnerships through FitFuture Fort Worth to inform educate and empower adult women on the benefits of regular physical activity and nutritious food choices to affect their overweight/obesity health problems Nutrition education sessions will introduce low-fat, high fiber foods, will demonstrate how to read labels as well as how to determine the nutritional content of food will illustrate ways to dine out on low-fat foods, and will teach participants how to shop for a variety of nutrient dense foods that contribute to overall wellness. Physical activity sessions will include practical ways to achieve minimum guidelines for physical activity each week; will discuss physical activity as it relates to obesity and the risk for chronic disease and will demonstrate various methods of physical activity that can be done without the use of expensive equipment. All sessions are aimed at empowering women to become self-motivated and to take an active role in controlling their weight.
