Subject: Rape Awareness Week
1413
Rape Awareness Week, April 21-27 , 1991 is a county wide education
effort of the Fort Worth Commission on the Status of Women & the
Rape Crisis Program of the Women's Center of Tarrant County.
The stated goals of this multi-faceted effort are to:
1 . Effect change through greater public knowledge regarding the
characteristics and prevalence of sexual violence; i .e.
Rape is a crime of violence.
2. Force a re-examination of rape myths and stereotypes; i .e.
Women and children do not cause rape.
3. Create a supportive and healing environment for survivors;
4. Facilitate local , state, and national involvement in
judicial and political issues surrounding sexual violence -
through lobbying, court monitoring, and demands of
accountability;
5 . Use our community's involvement to focus national attention
on sexual violence.
To accomplish these goals, a county-wide public awareness
campaign has been created. Information packets have been sent to
each municipal government and all independent school districts in
Tarrant County. The Fort Worth Independent School District will
issue flyers to every secondary school student and put posters on
every campus .
Religious organizations and churches have been furnished
thousands of flyers in English and Spanish. Universities are
participating as are several businesses, social service
organizations, and Carswell Air Force Base.
Awareness among the general public is being created through
public service announcements on television regarding the myths of
rape. Additionally, signs on the "T" buses, the City of Fort
Worth's water bill newsletter insert, a bill board, and 20 ,000
flyers to be dispensed by Tom Thumb area grocery stores will
increase public awareness .
