HomeMy WebLinkAboutOrdinance 15898ORDINANCE NO. l ~~~ ~ ~~ AN ORDINANCE AMENDING ORDINANCE NO. 15840 ORDERING A SPECIAL ELECTION TO BE HELD IN THE CITY OF FORT WORTH ON MAY 15, 2004, FOR THE PURPOSE OF ELECTING A CITY COUNCIL MEMBER FOR CITY COUNCIL DISTRICT 5 TO SERVE THE REMAINDER OF AN UNEXPIRED TERM WHEREAS, the City Council adopted Ordinance No 15840 on January 27 2004 ordering that a special election be held on May 15 2004 for the purpose of electing a City Council member for Crty Council District 5 to serve the remainder of an unexpired term, WHEREAS, Ordinance No 15840 named City Secretary Gloria Pearson as chief deputy early voting clerk; WHEREAS, on March 2, 2004 the City Council approved a resolution authorizing anoint election to be held with the Fort Worth Independent School District on May 15 2004 WHEREAS, Gloria Pearson has retired as City Secretary and is no longer employed by the City of Fort Worth, WHEREAS, rt is necessary to amend Ordinance No 15840 to name Sylvia Glover as chief deputy early voting clerk and to revise the hours for early voting and the list of polling places attached as Exhibit A in order to facilitate a ~omt election with the Fort Worth Independent School District; NOW THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT WORTH, TEXAS ~~ SECTION 1 The City Council hereby orders that a special election be held on Saturday May 15 2004 at which all qualified voters of City Council Distract 5 may vote for the purpose of electing a councilmember from Distract 5 to serve the remainder of an unexpired term until the regular Crty Council election m May 2005 SECTION 2. Candidates may file an application for a place on the special election ballot commencing March 15 2004 in the City Secretary's Office, located in the Municipal Building, 1000 Throckmorton, Fort Worth, Texas. The filing deadline is 5.00 p.m. on Apnl 14 2004 SECTION 3. (a) Robert Parten, Tarrant County Elections Administrator shall serve as the early voting clerk. Mr Parten s official mailing address is. Tarrant County Courthouse 100 West Weatherford Fort Worth, Texas 76196 (b) Acting City Secretary Sylvia Glover shall serve as chief deputy early voting clerk. (c) Applications for ballots by mail shall be mailed to Robert Parten at the address set out in subsection (a). Applications for ballot by mail must be received no later than the close of business on May 7 2004 SECTION 4. (a) Early voting by personal appearance shall be conducted beginning Apri128, 2004 and continuing through May 11 2004 at the following locations in the City of Fort Worth. Apri128-30 8.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. May 3 through 7 (Monday-Fnday) 8.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. May 8 (Saturday) 8.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. May 10-11 (Monday Tuesday) 7.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m. SECTION 5. The locations of the polling places for the election are set forth on Exhibit A attached hereto and made a part hereof. The polling places will be open on May 15 2004 from 7.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m. SECTION 6. This ordinance shall take effect upon adoption. Change certain polling places and early voting hours to accommodate a joint election with the Fort Worth Independent School District. DISCUSSION On January 27 2004 the City Council approved Ordinance No 15840 ordering a special election on May 15 2004 for the election of a Council Member in Council District 5 to serve the remainder of an unexpired term held by Council Member Frank Moss until the regular City Council election in May 2005 The ordinance named Gloria Pearson (who was then serving as the City Secretary) as Chief Deputy Early Voting Clerk. Ms. Pearson retired effective February 27 2004 and is no longer employed by the City The attached ordinance names Acting City Secretary Sylvia Glover as Chief Deputy Early Voting Clerk. The Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD) has also ordered that an election be held on May 15 2004 for the election of school board members for single-member districts 1 4 6 7 and 8 and election of a school board president-at-large At the City Council meeting on March 2, 2004 the City Council will consider a resolution authorizing the Tarrant County Elections Administrator to conduct a joint election with the FWISD If the City Council approves the resolution the FWISD and the City will share in election costs.
