SUBJECT ORDINANCE ADJUSTING THE AUTHORIZED CIVIL SERVICE STAFFING IN THE
FIRE DEPARTMENT BY ADDING ONE FIRE LIEUTENANT POSITION
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the City Council
Adopt the attached ordinance specifying the number of authorized positions in the Fire Department,
thereby effectively increasing the number of authorized lieutenant positions in the Fire Department
by one, and
2 Adopt the attached supplemental appropriation ordinance increasing Fire Department
appropriations by $41,313 and decreasing the unreserved, undesignated fund balance by the same
amount to fund the additional position
DISCUSSION
The Fire Department proposes that one lieutenant position be added to the authorized civil service
staffing for the purpose of regulating mobile fueling activities within the City The fire lieutenant position
will serve as the inspector and regulator for mobile fueling activities, including site plan reviews, on-site
inspections, and permit application reviews
The addition of the fire lieutenant was discussed with the City Council on May 22, 2001 at the Pre-
Council briefing on mobile fueling The initial cost of the position, including four months salary and
benefits and cone-time purchase of equipment totals $41,313 On-going costs, based on the current
fire lieutenant salary structure, are $69,838
The addition of the position referred to above would result in the following change in the authorized
strength of the Fire Department:
