SUBJECT APPLICATION FOR A MUSEUM ASSESSMENT PROGRAM II GRANT TO THE
AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF MUSEUMS AND HISTORY MUSEUM GRANT TO THE
TEXAS HISTORICAL COMMISSION FOR THE LOG CABIN VILLAGE
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the City Council
1 Authorize the City Manager to apply for and accept, if awarded, grant applications to the American
Association of Museums and the Texas Historical Commission for the Log Cabin Village, and
2 Adopt the attached appropriation ordinance increasing the estimated receipts and appropriations in
the General Fund by $550 and in the Special Trust Fund by $1,775 upon receipt of the grants.
DISCUSSION
The American Association of Museums, through the Institute of Museum and Library Services, offers a
Museum Assessment Program (MAP) The MAP II offers museums and libraries the chance to have a
Collections Management Assessment. The assessment focuses on the collections policies,
documentation and .preservation evidenced in a museum's total operation Consultants evaluate
museums and libraries to ensure these public entities have the resources and information needed to
properly care for the collections left in their trust. The Log Cabin Village is applying for a MAP II grant,
which would provide $1,775 to underwrite the cost of consultant fees for the assessment. If the
expenses of the assessment exceed the grant amount, the museum will be responsible for paying the
difference The museum may keep any funds remaining after all expenses have been paid, however,
those funds must be applied to the museum's operating budget. It is anticipated that the requested
grant funds will cover all fees.
The Texas Historical Commission History Programs Division offers a History Museum matching grant
program for education and conservation purposes The limit of the grant is $1,000, with preference
given to smaller requests so that more museums can be assisted The Log Cabin Village is applying
for $550 from the Texas Historical Commission to be used toward the purchase of six metal shelving
units for artifact storage The Log Cabin Village would meet the matching requirement by providing
$254 of volunteer and staff labor as in-kind services and $325 of budgeted expense for conservation
supplies
On December 21, 1999, the Parks and Community Services Advisory Board endorsed these grant
proposals.
