SUBJECT
Adopt an Ordinance Changing the Name of the Jim Wright Freeway Service Road to Windy Ryon Way
from North Main Street to its Western Terminus (COUNCIL DISTRICT 7)
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the City Council adopt an ordinance changing the name of the Jim Wright Freeway
Service Road to Windy Ryon Way from North Main Street to its western terminus
DISCUSSION
A right-of-way currently extends west from North Main Street to the Windy Ryon Arena This existing right
of-way is named Jim Wright Freeway Service Road which could cause confusion for providing emergency
services to events at the arena To prevent any delay in provision of emergency services the City of Fort
Worth proposes to rename this existing right-of-way Windy Ryon Way A map of the area is attached as
Exhibit A.
Mr Ryon was a cowboy and business man founder of Ryon's Saddle Shop and Western Store in the Fort
Worth Stockyards Each year a Windy Ryon Memorial Roping event is held at the arena to honor the
memory of local cowboys Over the years nearly a half million dollars has been donated to help area youth
through scholarships and donations to organizations such as the West Texas Boys Ranch and the Ronald
McDonald House
The Fire Department supports this street name change request.
The Transportation and Public Works Department states that the cost for changing and instaNing new
street name signs will be $245 00
Pursuant to Texas state statute a public hearing must precede the ordinance adoption of the proposed
change Notice to adjacent property owners along both sides of the affected street was mailed on January
29 2010 A copy of the notice is attached as Exhibit B
The proposed street name change lies within COUNCIL DISTRICT 7
