suB~ECT REVISION OF THE PARKING METER ORDINANCE
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the City Council approve the attached ordinance, which amends Section 26-103
in Chapter 26 "Motor Vehicles and Traffic" of the Code of the City of Fort Worth, Texas, to increase
parking meter rates
DISCUSSION
In conjunction with recommending the purchase of electronic meters, it is recommended that
parking meter rates be increased in the Central Business District (CBD) (Zones 1-3) and in the TCU
area (Zone 4)
The last parking meter rate increase was in August 1982. The rate structure created in 1982 was
designed to encourage short-term parking and rapid turnover in the core area of the CBD, and to
provide all-day parking on the fringes of the CBD for the overflow from off-street parking lots However,
staff has seen an increase in all-day parking on meters meant for short-term parking, signaling that
rates may be in competition with off-street parking lots designed for afl day parking Also, parking meter
rates in the City of Fort Worth are low in comparison to other Texas cities The top hourly rate in the
cities of Dallas and Houston is $1 00 All the meters in the City of Austin are one rate, $0 75 per hour
The City of San Antonio is $0 75 per hour for special events
Below are the current and proposed parking meter rates in the City of Fort Worth for the time {imits
shown The specific time and rates are as shown on the attached ordinance
Current
Zone 1 (Two hour time limit)
Zone 2 (Two hour time limit)
Zone 3 (Ten hour time .limit)
0
Zone 4 (Two hour time limit)
$0 60 per hour
$0 30 per hour
$0 15 per hour
$0 10 per hour
Proposed
$0 75 per hour
$0 40 per hour
$0.20 per hour
$0 15 per hour
No funding will be required to implement the rate changes if the electronic meters are purchased The
electronic meters will be programmed with the new rates, and rate plates will be provided with the
mechanisms
