DISCUSSION
The Texas Department of Health (TDH) provides grant funds to local health departments across the
state to provide essential public health services. These funds need to be directed at reducing the
incidence of cardiovascular disease in the community
The City's Public Health Department will use these funds to address the following essential health
functions, as defined by the TDH
• Inform, educate and empower people about health status
• Mobilize community partnerships to identify and solve health problems
This program was initiated during Fiscal Year 1998-99, with its goal being to identify and educate local
citizens about the long-term and short-term benefits of physical activity Lack of physical activity is a
high risk factor in several chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer
This program has been implemented by a collaborative effort of the Public Health Department and the
Parks and Community Services Department. They will continue to improve existing walking paths in
neighborhood parks throughout the City by marking the distance of existing walking paths and
increasing public access to this information
Additionally, Public Health Department staff will initiate walking programs for residents in designated
neighborhoods through special events and community meetings targeted to educate these groups on
the benefits of physical activity
