SUBJECT SUPPLEMENTAL APPROPRIATION FOR CONSTRUCTION OF TEMPORARY FIRE

RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the City Council adopt the attached supplemental appropriations
ordinance increasing General Fund appropriations by 5928,854 and decreasing the unreserved,
undesignated fund balance by the same amount to fund construction of a temporary fire station,
purchase of apparatus, and one month's training expenses for the additional positions
DISCUSSION
North Fort Worth development has progressed to the point that an additional fire station is
needed to maintain acceptable response times Currently there is no fire station between Station
31, located in the Park Glen area, and Station 35 at Alliance Airport, with a distance of about
ten miles between them
While development of the area is proceeding apace, major infrastructure such as arterial streets
have yet to be built in much of it, making location of a permanent station difficult at this time
Staff proposes building a temporary station on Water Department land at the intersection of Ray
White Road and Alta Vista Road, roughly halfway between Stations 31 and 35 The Water
Department is planning to build a water storage tower at this site in seven years, by which time
the Fire Department will be able to make a more informed decision about locating Station 37 on
a permanent basis
A breakdown of costs is as follows
Apparatus (1 pumper and 1 mobile water unit) 5600,000
Trainee cost (1 month) 54,000
Construction of temporary station 274,854
Total 5928,854
The apparatus will have to be ordered immediately so they will be available when the station is
activated The trainee class will begin in September 1997 and graduate in February 1998
Construction of the station, which is a two-bay metal building with 1,600 feet of living space,
will begin in August 1997 and finish in January 1998 Activation of the station will occur in
., _; ,
Februar~y~.~199$
Funding for the remainder of the trainee costs, station equipment, and operation of the station
will be included in the City Manager's 1997-98 proposed budget
