SUBJECT AMENDMENT TO THE CITY CODE REDUCING THE NUMBER OF HUMAN RELATIONS
COMMISSIONERS FROM TWENTY-ONE TO ELEVEN
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the City Council adopt the attached ordinance amending Chapter 17 of
the City Code to reduce the number of Commissioners on the Fort Worth Human Relations
Commission from twenty-one (21) to eleven (11)
DISCUSSION
The Fort Worth Human Relations Commission (FWHRC) was established in 1967 as the principal
body responsible for the addressing of racial, ethnic and cultural issues in the City of Fort Worth
The number of Commissioners specified in the FWHRC's enabling legislation was twenty-one,
appointed by Council on an at-large basis, with the membership of the Commission reflecting the
racial, ethnic and cultural diversity of the citizenry of Fort Worth Due to the evolving nature of
the mission of the FWHRC and the inherent administrative and logistical problems associated
with the maintenance of a commission or "board" of that size (the largest in the United Statesl,
current membership of the FWHRC has recommended to the City Council that the number of
Commissioner places on the FWHRC be reduced to eleven appointed on the same basis and with
the same diversity criteria in place
At its June 7 meeting, the Council Committee on Intra- and Intergovernmental Affairs reached
consensus in favor of recommending this action to the City Council
