DELETION OF TWO LIEUTENANT POSITIONS FROM THE FIRE DEPARTMENT RECOMMENDATION It is recommended that the City Council adopt the attached ordinance decreasing the total number of authorized Fire Lieutenant positions from ninety-seven (97) to ninety- five (95). DISCUSSION The Fire Department's FY 1992-93 budget includes a reduction of twenty (20) civil service positions of various ranks, nine of which were eliminated October 1, 1992 and eleven to be deleted during the fiscal year through normal attrition. On September 29, 1992, City Council approved M&C G-9865 adopting an ordinance (Ordinance No. 11176). establishing the authorized strength of civil service personnel in the Fire Department and stating the Fire Department's intent to delete the eleven (11) additional civil service positions. Such intent was declared so as to negate any employee expectancy for promotion into the positions as they become vacant Since that time City Council has approved the deletion of one Lieutenant position (M&C G-9974). There are currently two Fire Lieutenant vacancies in the Fire Department with no civil service eligibility list in effect for the positions. Deletion of the two Lieutenant positions now will change the current authorized strength as follows: Current Authorized Staffing Staffing After Deletion Key Code Classification Total Key Code Classification Total Y03 Lieutenant 97 Y03 Lieutenant 95 FISCAL INFORMATION/CERTIFICATION• The 1992-93 Fire Department budget anticipated these changes, therefore, no additional costs or savings are realized by the deletions.
